Chapter 20

Dearest William,

I'm stopping with the secrecy of address, for I love writing your name (and saying it). I hope you do not mind me addressing you so in these letters—it seems unlikely anyone should discover them. I think we shall be safe, after all.

You could never be too forward with me. You say the path to falling in love can be a slow one, but I must say, I believe I am speeding up to a brisk pace along this path, and it will not be long before I am propelled over the precipice completely. I cannot fathom how you seem to look more handsome every time we meet, and your manner and way of looking at me, suggests that you feel the same.

Indeed, I do think I am in love...but I still want our love to remain private, ours and only ours, for now. Is that unbearable? Intolerable? The joy of an engagement betwixt us comes crashing down when I imagine the theatrical raptures of my over-exuberant mother. If only your friend would hurry and propose to my dear sister, then maybe we could move forward, as the attention would not be upon my person alone, but shared between myself and my most dear beloved sister...I hope you can understand my reasoning here, William.

Your recollection of myself at Netherfield, my, oh my. I was not aware of my appearance nor its effect on you. Believe me, my dear, it was unconsciously done! But it warms my cheeks with blushes to read such things about myself coming from you. It shocks me, perhaps—but maybe “shock” is not the best way to describe the feelings it gives me...it makes me feel, well, I cannot say, but I know it is a rather good feeling. Your words have such an effect on me. I fear I will be blushing for many days hence. Oh, dearest William. You are...well, what you are, I cannot say, but I feel it is a very good thing I am wanting to express.

Is this love? I feel like I am a slave to thoughts of you when you are not near me. I believe I end up with your letters committed to memory. I daresay I love you.

Seeing you at Lucas Lodge was wonderful, despite having to be wary of ourselves, lest watchful eyes suspect our deeper affections. I am not worried about my dear friend, as she is safe, but it is true, her suspicions indeed are aroused. Do not fear, my love, for she is quite the champion of a match between us.

However, that certain female of your party is not too pleased, I can imagine. The way she glared at me, and her scowls as she looked upon us. Be careful of her, William. She must think she has some sort of claim on you (and indeed, I must admit, I dislike the thought of her daring to put her hand upon your arm as I often have seen her do), and something tells me this particular woman will not give up her desires so easily.
